Photography

These are a selection of photos that I have taken during this project, during the first photoshoot of this project me and Dmitri were the models as we pretended to play the musical instruments available, this was to go with the musical theme that Chi Fest has, during this photoshoot me and Dmitri shared a camera so that when I modeled he was taking photos and when he modeled I took photos, this way we could both get all the photos that we needed.
We also went to the music block and took some photos of a coulple of groups that were practising, it was hard to get decent photos during this as the lighting wasnt great and there was lots of equipment and other people from the class were in the background of all the photos, this made them hard to edit in photoshop.

We also took photos of me and Chris wearing different hats, this was to go with the drama theme, another of Chi Fest's themes, also the photos of the dancers were to go with this theme too, with the danceres we used a dark back drop this therefore gave the photos a more performance look to them this I felt was a good effect as it made the photos look like they are action shots.

Refined Final Designs

After getting feed back from my tutor about my first designs being to dark I decided to go for a more summery feel by upping the brighness on the image that i used and I tried to get rid of as much shadow as possible, I also decided to add some colour to my map design and used a more relevant background, I also decided to use a brighter and more summer looking logo design, I feel that my designs look a lot more festival like when the posters and flyers look brighter and these will be more appealing to the eye.

Evaluation

For this project I designed some information graphics, which included: posters, a flyer, a website, an iPhone App, a logo and a map, this was all for Chi Festivities, who needed promotional advertising for Chi Fest 2012.

I am really pleased with how this project turned out as I managed to produce a lot of designs with in the short amount of time that I had to come up with them, I am happy with my final designs as they all follow a theme and are generally appealing to the eye, in my opinion. I have also found that uploading my photos to a blog has made it easier for me to produce more work with the time the that I have.

I reckon that I can still improve on annotating my work and research and actually producing enough artist research and annotation as both are important if I am wanting to get a higher mark and it has been a constant downside to my previous projects, but now with the use of a blog instead of a sketch book I can add research at any time.

After getting feedback from my tutor on my previous final design choices, I was told that they were a bit too dark and need to be bright as Chi Fest is during the summer, after this feedback I went back to redesigning my final designs and made them more summer like, this included changing the brightness and contrast and changing my logo design to a brighter colour and mad my map design, I feel that thanks to the feed back I received my final pieces have turned out better and I’m happy with what I have designed.

Big Active ten to use a lot of different layers in their pieces, most of which are a combination of low-tech and high-tech piesces, they also tend to use collage to create a surreal look to their work.

A lot of the Big Active works seems to have a Pop Art style to them which is seen by the bright colours used in their work, some of the other pieces of their work has a surrealist look to them and almost look like something from a dream.

Their work always has a brilliand use of shapes and colours, this means that thier work can catch the eye of a view and due to the surrealist look, the view may find them interesting to view at.

I actually quite like some of Big Active's work as the wacky and surrealist look of their work shows that they have a great imagination.

Flyer Design

I created a flyer design which will be handed out to customers and will have the map design that I designed on the back of it.

To come up with the design for it I used a phot that was teken during one of the classes photshoots and added lighting effects to it and then added the type of font that i have been using in all my pieces to follow my theme.

Artist Reasearch - Saul Bass

File:SaulBassLogos.jpg

Saul Bass is well known for his graphics in films, most noticably Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and North by Northwest.

Saul Bass' work seems to only consist of two or three colours, this therefore creates a silhouetted effect to the different shapes that he uses in his work. In the instant of Vertigo Saul Bass uses shape which in itself creates a feeling of vertigo and if you watch the opening credits of Vertigo the way the shapes rotate make the user veel dizzy and high up.

I like Saul Bass' work as he uses simple lines and shapes and uses them to create a dramatic feel to he work and his work has remained iconic in film history.

Website Design

Also in the criteria was the need for me to design a website for Chi Fest, all i did for this was take a photo I had taken while taking photos of the music class and then edited the curves, saturation etc to give the phot a retro look then added some lighting effect. I then added some text over the music stand.
this is the final product of my website design.

Map Design

I created my own information graphic in the for of a map of the college (which is where Chi Fest is being held) this is so then the people who attend Chi Fest will be able to navigate their way through the college and find where the different events will be held around the college.
I started off with a photo of an already existing map of the college, this was my template for my own map of the college, I basically traced around the building outlines and then filled the outlines in with white.

I then coloured the sports pitches in green and labeled all of the buildings and added my own created icons for each area of importance, I then added a background which would follow my theme of the rest of my designs and lowered the opacity of the image.

Final Designs For Chi Fest

After creating my different designs for posters, flyers, maps etc, I chose the designs that I thought were the best and these will be the designs that I will be putting forward to Chi Festivities for them to consider if they want to use them or not.

Artist Research - Kate Gibb

"Kate Gibb studied Printed Textiles at Middlesex University before her studio gradually expanded during time completing her MA at St Martin's in London. Music has presented itself as a major outlet for her work, providing sleeve artwork for The Chemical Brothers, Simian, Bob Marley, Suede, My Computer and recently The Magic Numbers, amongst many more.

Kate Gibb’s client list is impressive and includes involvement with many Japanese magazines such as Relax, idea and most recently Atmosphere. In the UK she produced seventeen covers for the re-issue of the H G Wells’ back catalogue commissioned by Penguin Books. Her background in textiles and love of printed ephemera combined with an acute sense of colour has led her to working with fashion brands including Dries Van Noten, Levis, Lee and Adidas." - http://www.bigactive.com/illustration/kate-gibb

Kate Gibb has very interesting work in which she edits photos that she has taken and then uses colours to emphasize different parts and/or people in them, she also takes photos of a model in different pose, for example in the blue and pink image above she has taken a picture of a basketball player in many poses throught him playing a game, then she has layered them on top iof each other, this gives it a great effect and makes it seem really dramtic.

I like Kate Gibb's work as it is colourful and she uses many different techniques in an effective way and her work is very pleasing to the eye.

Chi Fest App Design

As well as designing a poster and logo, I designed an app for an iPhone using my poster design, that I want to be my final design choice, as the theme of it.
I decided to use the same font for the buttons of this app as it keeps with my idea of this festival, the background for it will be my poster designs, in the design above I have used the poster design with myself in it, and in the image below I used the image of my classmate.

Logo Designs Part 3

This is a new logo design that I came up with, in this design I went for a cube-like effect, I then went on to add colour to the design, I also had a go with adding some gradient colours to it as well.

in order to create this effect I created a rectangle shape and then warped it to create a sort of perspective feel to it the I added the font and did the same effect, I then added colour to six of them and Gradient effects to the other 6.

To come up with this design I was Inspired by the Pop Art movement, the main reason as to why I was inspired by this art movement was because I really like Pop Art’s simple but effective style and it also meant that I could use my imagination to come up with many different designs.

Artist Research - Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24 November 1864 - 9 September 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator, whose immersion in the decadent and theatrical life of fin de siecle Paris yielded an oeuvre of provocative images of modern life.

All of his work were hand drawn, but most of his posters ad very little detail and made great use of colours that stood out anf grab your attention.

Artist Research - Caz Haigh

"I’m a graphic designer and illustrator, based both in Sheffield and London, U.K.
My illustrations are inspired by my love of nature and I aim to incorporate environmentally friendly messages in my work whether it’s the subject I am illustrating or the materials and methods I use. I explore concepts and aesthetics equally, aiming to deliver playful outcomes.
I was raised in Hong Kong and was lucky enough to spend my childhood exploring rock pools along the beach. It was here where I learned how fascinating nature was, though also learned about it’s fragility after seeing the devastating effects of pollution washed up from across Asia.
15 Years later, after completing my Divemaster course, I have seen the negative impact we have had on the worlds oceans and find myself trying to marry my passion for design with a sense of responsibility for caring for the planet.
I work using both traditional methods and digital media and enjoy working on a wide range of projects  including editorial, advertising, merchandising, design for web and bespoke original artwork" - Extract from Caz Haigh's Website - http://cazhaigh.co.uk/

Caz Haigh's work has a very simplistic look to it and they are quite bland when it comes to colour as some of her work have very few colours in them, the colours used are quite dull with the exceptions of her work that are more about the evironment which mainly consit of vareious shades of green.

If there are figures in her work it is generally a silhouette of a person or an animal, this seems to be a running theme in most of her work, along with using the different shades of greys, white and black.

I personally am not a fan of Caz Haigh as I think that her work is actually pretty bland and the colours she uses aren't great.
